Punjab Kings, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, is a franchise team that has been a part of the Indian Premier League since its inception in 2008. The name change occurred in 2020 as the owners sought a fresh start for the franchise. The team has had a mixed performance history, with some seasons seeing them reach the playoffs while others struggled to make an impact. Despite this, the owners have been committed to the team, reflected in their co-ownership structure.
The franchise is co-owned by prominent personalities, such as Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, Wadia Group scion Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman, and telecom giant Bharti Airtel. This diverse ownership structure brings together expertise from different fields and is a testament to the passion for cricket in India. The owners have also been invested in the team’s success beyond just the area, with initiatives such as the adoption of government schools in Punjab to provide better facilities to students being implemented. Overall, Punjab Kings is more than just a franchise team; its owners’ commitment to cricket and their community reflects this.
The Punjab Kings have a team filled with exceptional players who have made their mark in the league. Look more closely at some noteworthy players who have played for them.
The Punjab Kings have been unable to clinch the IPL trophy to date. However, they have achieved some notable feats. They reached the final game in 2014 and also succeeded in qualifying for the semifinals twice in 2008 and 2013. The team has also seen individual achievements, with their players winning the Orange Cap and Purple Cap awards. The Orange Cap recognizes the leading run-scorer in the tournament, while the Purple Cap is awarded to the leading wicket-taker. KL Rahul was awarded the Orange Cap in 2016, whereas the current captain Mohammed Shami won the Purple Cap in 2019.
To aid the Delhi Capitals’ batting unit in 2019, Shikhar “Gabbar” Dhawan, an Indian star opener who has succeeded since the IPL’s inaugural season, has returned to his hometown. Dhawan joined PBKS after being acquired by the team for Rs. 8.25 crore during the TATA IPL 2022 auction. He previously dominated the show with the bat. In the IPL 2022 season, Dhawan had a terrific batsman’s run, amassing 460 runs from 14 matches at an average of 38.33. He created history in the 2023 auctions by investing significantly in the English Player Sam Curran, Punjab Kings. The 24-year-old was the most expensive acquisition after PBKS paid an incredible sum of Rs. 18.5 crores to acquire him. Chris Morris, a South African all-rounder, had previously held the record, which Curran surpassed. The Royals had spent Rs. 16.5 crores at the IPL 2021 auction. The clever cricketer, born in Northampton and made his IPL debut three years ago, quickly stood out, taking 13 wickets and scoring 95 runs, with an undefeated 55 as his highest score.
He was named the tournament’s Player of the Tournament after helping England win the T20 World Cup with 13 kills. After being elevated to the top position in 2020, Curran demonstrated his prowess with the bat by leading Chennai Super Kings in scoring with 186 runs and a half-century. Curran had a challenging IPL 2021 season, taking just nine wickets and scoring 56 runs. He chose not to participate in the IPL 2022 super auction to concentrate on rehabilitation.
