Rajasthan Royals

History:

The Rajasthan Royals have been a significant contender from the league’s establishment in the Indian Premier League. Manoj Badale owns the team and is captained by Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson. They call the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur their home ground, which has been an intimidating fortress for opposing teams. In the inaugural edition of the IPL, under the captaincy of retired Australian cricketer Shane Warne, the Rajasthan Royals put up an exceptional performance that stunned everyone. The team went on to clinch the title, which was a remarkable achievement considering they were the underdogs. The victory has been etched forever in the memory of Rajasthan Royals fans and cemented the team’s reputation as a strong and fearless contender in the IPL.

Notable players

Over the years, the Rajasthan Royals have had several of the world’s top cricketers represent them. Here are a few of the well-known athletes who have played for the Rajasthan Royals:

  • Shane Warne: The legendary Australian leg-spinner captained in 2008 and saw the Rajasthan Royals win their first IPL championship. Where he also took 19 wickets in the tournament. Another Australian all-rounder,
  • Shane Watson: was also a vital cog in the Royals’ wheel, playing for the team from 2008-2015 and winning the Player of the Tournament award in 2008.
  • Yusuf Pathan: Yusuf Pathan, the hard-hitting Indian all-rounder, had a successful stint with the Rajasthan Royals from 2011-2013. He was instrumental in the team’s title-winning campaign in 2008, where he scored 435 runs and took 8 wickets.
  • Graeme Smith: Graeme Smith, the former South African captain, was also part of the Rajasthan Royals team in 2013, scoring 270 runs in 12 matches.
  • Rahul Dravid: the former Indian captain, was not only a great cricketer but also a mentor to many young players in the Rajasthan Royals team. He played for the team from 2011-2013 and was crucial in leading the squad to the playoffs in 2013.
  • Jos Buttler: Jos Buttler, the English wicketkeeper-batsman, has been a vital cog in the Royals’ batting lineup since joining the team in 2018. He has scored over 1500 runs for the team and has been one of the team’s most consistent performers.
  • Ben Stokes: the English all-rounder, is another notable player representing the Rajasthan Royals. The team bought him for a whopping 12.5 crores in the 2018 IPL auction, and he has been a crucial component of their batting and bowling departments. Stokes’ all-around abilities make him a valuable asset to any team, and the Rajasthan Royals are lucky to have him in their ranks.

Achievements

Rajasthan Royals have not won any IPL titles since their triumph in the inaugural season. However, the team has had some close finishes over the years, including making it to the playoffs in 2013, where they finished as runners-up. They also reached the playoffs in 2018, ending in the fourth position.

The youngest Indian to score a century, with 400 runs during India’s Under-19 World Cup 2020 campaign. Yashasvi Jaiswal was just 17 years old when she was purchased by the Rajasthan Royals for Rs. 2.40 crore before the IPL 2020. Yashasvi’s retention before the 15th season was done so with that goal in mind, which was given that RR saw him as a long-term possibility. Being only one of the three guys said a lot about his abilities. Yashasvi scored 249 runs in 10 games from 168 balls during the 2021 season, displaying a respectable strike rate. In that season, he even reached his first 50. Before the IPL 2023 auction, he was kept after continuing his strong run of play in the 2022 season, scoring 258 runs. The young player has shown promise in his first three IPL seasons and hopes to continue that success in the 2023 season.

Riyan Parag, a part of the Indian team that won the 2018 U19 World Cup, was purchased by Rajasthan Royals for Rs. 20 lakhs in the final round of the third round of the player auction before the 2019 IPL. Riyan can hit the ball powerfully. He is the son of Mithu Baruah, a national record-holding swimmer, and former Assam state cricketer Parag Das. The right-handed batsman, who debuted in the IPL in 2019, now holds the record for being the youngest Player to reach fifty runs in the league. RR has a lot of confidence in his skills. He can hit the ball far, be a finisher, and add some helpful spins. At the massive auction held before the 15th edition, RR paid a staggering Rs. 3.8 crore to purchase him back. As a result, he scored 183 runs with a respectable strike rate of 138.64. The team kept him on before the 2023 campaign. He aimed to ignite the scene again with his hunger and aggression.

Joe Root is one of England’s most honored and renowned cricketers to have ever stepped foot within the 22-yard line. The 32-year-old, who was not purchased in the 2018 auction but was acquired for Rs. 1 crore in the IPL 2023 sale, will make his IPL debut with the Rajasthan Royals. Having played his final Twenty20 International for England in May 2019, he has also been absent from the Three Lions’ T20 setup. But Root, who scored 249 runs at an average of 49.8 and struck out 146.47 in the 2016 T20 World Cup, was crucial to England’s runner-up position. His addition to the Rajasthan Royals lineup gives their hitting lineup more depth and balance, and he might forge a potent combo with players like Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler.

R. Ashwin is a magician, and RR has him among them. The opposition’s batters will find it very difficult to negotiate with Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal because they are a strong spin pair. Ashwin’s track record speaks for itself, and the cunning off-spinner has made a name for himself by setting record after record in the Test arena. He is the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Test matches and recently broke the record for the fastest Indian bowler to reach 450 Test wickets. With his all-around efforts in the 2022 edition, he stood out, scoring 191 runs, taking 12 wickets, and assisting RR in making the final. Watch for this enchanted spinner, a brilliant and hard-working cricketer. He always has a few sleights of hand.

As a batter, it is hard not to get intimidated when a strapping, broad-shouldered fast bowler from the Caribbean looks down on you from six feet seven inches. That’s one reason why sides in the shortest format decide to include Jason Holder in their squads. After representing the Chennai Super Kings in 2013, the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2015, Kolkata Knight Riders in 2016, Holder were back in the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Holder sparked a bidding war at the 2022 IPL auction, where the Lucknow Super Giants bought him for Rs. 8.75 crores. He picked up 14 wickets from 12 matches in IPL 2022. RR and CSK were locked in a bidding war to get the services of Holder in the IPL 2023 auction before the hammer came down in favor of RR at Rs. 5.75 crores. Holder, who brings leadership qualities to the table, can bowl at any stage of the game and use the long handle to change the match, will be a solid addition to the RR squad.

Navdeep Saini is one of India’s most promising fast-bowling prospects right now. He can readily exceed 140 kilometers per hour. As Delhi advanced to the Ranji Trophy final in 2017–18, he was the team’s standout performer. In the tenth season of the league, Delhi Daredevils purchased him. A tense bidding battle for the young Player took place at the 2018 Player Auction, and RCB ultimately won out and paid Rs. 3 crores to get him. Saini spent three seasons with RCB before being purchased by RR at the 2022 IPL Auction. He was then re-signed in time for the 2023 IPL. Saini will be a key component of the RR’s pace department and, along with seam and pace, adds a wealth of domestic experience to the table.

At the IPL 2022 auction, RR paid Rs. 75 lakhs for the young West Indian fast bowler. The left-arm quick is renowned for his variety and is capable of bowling at any point in the game. However, he is a beneficial choice during the slog overs when hitters typically target everything sent their way. He is a cunning bowler who has made an impression on the West Indies and in many leagues worldwide in his young career. He took 11 wickets in seven matches during his first IPL season. The franchise kept him on staff before the 2023 auction. In the 16th IPL season, McCoy might play a significant role in the RR pace battery.

Prasidh Krishna, also known as “Skiddy,” will be hitting the deck for the Rajasthan Royals. Even on calm surfaces, the young Karnataka right-arm fast can consistently bowl above 140 mph, and his tall frame adds extra bounce. Prasidh, who began his career as a net bowler for RCB, made his IPL debut in 2018 when he was selected to replace Kamlesh Nagarkoti at Kolkata Knight Riders. In just 7 games, he picked up 10 wickets, seizing the chance with both hands.

He was acquired by the Rajasthan Royals in 2022 for a record sum after spending four seasons with KKR. Prasidh and Trent Boult became one of the season’s most lethal new-ball pairings, as Prasidh frequently employed his length-ball variations to worry the batters. With 19 wickets, the second-most of any Rajasthan Royals bowler, and 3 maidens tied for the joint-most in the competition, he concluded a successful season for the team and himself. Prasidh made his international ODI debut in 2021 and dazzled with 4/54 – the best ODI debut numbers for an Indian player.

One of the top professionals in the field is Trent Boult. He is knowledgeable and has been a vital member of the New Zealand team for many years. For Sunrisers Hyderabad, the left-arm bowler debuted in the 2015 IPL. He had a breakthrough year in 2018, appearing in 14 games for the Delhi Capitals and taking 18 wickets. In the 13th edition, Boult was genuinely exceptional when sharing the ball with Jasprit Bumrah. He was a fantastic addition to MI’s team for the 2020 season.

He played a significant part in MI’s championship victory and collected 25 wickets from 15 games. After spending two years with MI, Boult switched to RR, who paid a hefty 8 crore rupees at the IPL 2022 auction to get the services of the Kiwi bowler. Boult was the third-most costly acquisition for RR after Prasidh Krishna and Shimron Hetmyer. From 16 games in the IPL 2022, he took 16 wickets. Before the 2023 auction, RR kept him on staff. Boult has made some of the most incredible catches and is a fantastic fielder. He’ll once again play a significant role in the RR pace lineup.

Murugan Ashwin first gained attention after he triggered a bidding war at the 2016 IPL auction, where Rising Pune Supergiants acquired him for Rs. 4.5 crore from a base price of Rs. 10 lakhs. He performed admirably in the 2015–16 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, finishing as Tamil Nadu’s second-highest wicket-taker with 10 dismissals from six games at an outstanding average of 12.70 and an economy rate of 5.52. That performance was, in fact, one of the factors that enabled Ashwin to secure an IPL deal.

He has since represented other teams, including the Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Daredevils. At the IPL auction for 2023, Rajasthan Royals paid his base price of Rs. 20 lakhs to acquire him. The aggressive 32-year-old leg-spinner has various variations in his toolbox, including a deadly googly. Being a regular performer on the domestic scene, he also brings a wealth of expertise to the table. He’ll make the RR spin assault more complex.

Yuzvendra Chahal gained notoriety when, in 2009, he finished the competition as the National Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy’s best wicket-taker with 34 wickets. He joined the Mumbai Indians team in 2011 and remained there throughout the Champions League T20, where he attracted attention in the championship game. In 2014, RCB acquired Chahal. He has since made a name for himself as one of the top spinners on the world stage. He combines fly, dip, spin, and cunning to devastating effect. Chahal moved to RR after spending seven seasons with RCB after being purchased for Rs. 6.50 crore in the 2022 IPL auction. The following year, in the 15th edition, he took 27 wickets from 17 games.
